After the use of fossil energy, deforestation is one of the main causes of increased CO 2 emissions. At UPM, we plant 50 million trees every year and manage our forests sustainably to maintain their health and ability to grow and absorb more carbon. Over the last five years, the annual average carbon sink of UPM’s own and leased forests in Finland and Uruguay amounted to 3.8 million tonnes of CO 2 equivalents.
