Our safety commitments and priorities

Employee well-being We focus on our employees' overall health and well-being. Our approach is holistic and divided into four themes: body, mind, heart, and soul. Our commitment to a safe work environment is based on our safety vision and rules, including safety principles. We aim to have an accident-free workplace. Building the safety culture We develop a caring safety culture through employee participation and positive open communication. Safety is a value that guides us in making the right decisions and choic es. Our behavioral safety leadership training helps our managers integrate safety into daily operations and ways of working. This includes activities such as regular safety observations, improvement suggestions, participation in risk assessments and incident investigations, and safety training. Strong focus on process safety Our UPM-wide process safety standard sets minimum requirements for process safety in operations, projects, and functions. We systematically develop process-safety-relat ed competences. Global e-learning training

on process safety has increased awareness throughout the organization. Process safety risk assessments are integrated into invest ment project preparation. Management systems and safety audits All our production units have a Health and Safety (H&S) management system in place, and 93% of them have ISO 45001 certification. This certification covers 74% of our employees. Annual safety audits are an integral part of the H&S management system, focusing on risk management and operating permits. Continuous improvement and recognition Safety is embedded in all our daily operations, practices, and new and ongoing projects. Thorough investigation of incidents and effec tive risk management play an important role in making UPM's operations safer. We share safety observations and best practices across our businesses to improve safety. We recognize exemplary safety perfor mance with company-wide awards to highlight units that have made significant efforts to improve their employees' health, safety, and well-being.

Facts and figures

We continued to implement the UPM Health and Well-being concept in 2025. Despite our continu ous efforts to prevent accidents, two serious acci dents occurred in 2025: one involving a contractor; and one happened to an UPM employee. All accidents were thoroughly investigated in close cooperation with the authorities and contrac tors. We initiated corrective and preventive actions and shared key learning lessons across all busi nesses to prevent similar accidents in the future. In 2025, we reported 42,000 safety-related near misses and safety observations, and we conducted 35,000 safety walks and discussions. The 2025 health and well-being pulse survey was conducted in May. In general, scores were the same or slightly better than in the 2024 survey. The biofuels refinery in Lappeenranta, Finland, received the 2025 UPM Safety Award for Best Improver. Over the past 10 years, the unit has systematically enhanced safety with a strong emphasis on safety leadership, continuous im provement, and safety training. The Scarborough factory of UPM Adhesive Materials received the Safety Award for the Best Steady Performer for its excellent safety culture.
