A balancing act – chemicals and sustainability

S ince it was established ten EMF’s Circular Economy 100 (CE100) network provides a neutral global platform for governments, universities and businesses like UPMRaflatac to collectively explore how to move beyond the “take-make-waste" mindset of the linear economy. “Through the EMF, UPMRaflatac takes part in multi-industry projects to find ways to accelerate the transition to a sustainable circular economy. We are also signatories to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment,” says Oona Koski , Manager, Sustainability, UPMRaflatac. Companies that have signed the years ago, the EllenMacArthur Foundation (EMF) has been at the forefront of the circular economy movement. The commitment represent 20% of the total volume of plastic packaging produced globally. Together with the technology, education and public sectors, these corporations are working together to address plastic waste and pollution at its source.

The Mass Balance Approach could offer a basis for the long-awaited sustainability certification system that the chemical industry is sorely lacking.
