OBJECTIVES

At UPM Forestal Oriental we are committed to respecting people and the environment based on integration and the creation of long-term ties that are mutually beneficial. We work to sustain excellent environmental performance in all operations and contribute significantly to the conservation of biodiversity. UPM’s responsible forestry management includes four key areas: continuous improvement, protecting biodiversity, use of the best technology and procedures available, and continued research to address future environmental challenges. We continuously manage our operation’s environmental aspects, as they are the starting point for setting annual goals and developing detailed environmental programmes with scopes, timelines and responsibilities. We regularly monitor progress towards the goals set.

OUR MAIN STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES ARE:

•Ensure that forestry practices maximise positive impacts

TO MEET THE PREVIOUSLY DEFFINED OBJECTIVES, WE IMPLEMENTED A SET OF SPECIFIC ACTIONS, INCLUDING:

and minimise negative environmental impacts

•Maintaining a Network of Preserved Natural Areas

•Training on environmental management throughout the company

•Contribute to the conservation of sensitive environments and biodiversity

•Implementing monitoring plans for the key environmental values (biodiversity, soil and water) •Ensure the incorporation of technology for the best environmental performance •Identification, analysis and management of significant environmental aspects (SEA)

•Put into action inter-institutional cooperation agreements (UDELAR, CENUR, Vida Silvestre, IPEF – PROMAB, independent experts, among others) •Continue to improve the company’s environmental management standing, as well as the assimilation of environmental indicators into the decision-making process

•Ensure compliance with environmental requirements

•Sustain the company’s leadership in environmental management on a national scale
