ATMOSPHERE As part of UPM’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, we can highlight the contribution of forestry activities to the sequestration of carbon in the atmosphere to help mitigate the increase in global temperature. At UPM Forestal Oriental we currently carry out several initiatives to help understand and manage our emissions. Some examples include: •We identify, manage and monitor carbon emission s and sequestration •We provide information for the annual report on carbon emissions and sequestration put together by UPM g roup •We monitor the behaviour and evolution of organic carbon in the soil

Landscape is a social value, and we manage it responsibly through active involvement with communities since forestry as an activity is still new in some areas of the country. The design of our plantations takes into consideration the main landscape characteristics, focusing on the patchwork of species, their sizes, ages, s pace, and regeneration cycles. Our goal is to integrate and preserve as we produce. To do this we analyse the landscape in its totality, beyond the land’s property limits, according to scale, intensity, and risks, and we define adjustments to be made to the design if necessary.

An ecosystem service is any benefit that an ecosystem provides to people, including improvements to health economy and quality of life. Through biodiversity conservation and functional diversity, we seek to safeguard the structure and normal function of ecosystems. Atmospheric carbon sequestration is an ecosystem service generated by forestry activity.
