OBJECTIVES

At UPM Forestal Oriental we are committed to respecting people and the environment based on integration, thus creating long t erm ties that are mutually beneficial. We work to sustain excellent environmental performance in all operations and contribute significantly to the conservation of biodiversity. We continuously manage our operation’s environmental aspects, as they are the starting point for setting annual goals and developing detailed environmental programmes with scopes, timelines and responsibilities. We regularly monitor progress towards the goals set.

OUR MAIN STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES ARE:

Ensure that forestry practices maximise positive impacts

and minimise negative environmental impacts

•Maintaining a Network of p reserved n atural a reas •Implementing monitoring plans for the key environmental values (biodiversity, soil and water) •Ensure the incorporation of technology for the best environmental performance •Identification, analysis, and management of significant environmental aspects

•Training on environmental management throughout the company

Contribute to the conservation of sensitive environments and biodiversity

•Put into action inter-institutional cooperation agreements (UDELAR, CENUR, Vida Silvestre, IPEF – PROMAB, independent experts, among others) •Continue to improve the company’s environmental management standing, as well as the assimilation of environmental indicators into the decision-making process

Ensure compliance with environmental requirements

Sustain the company’s leadership in environmental management on a national scale
